In a contentious moment during England's Test match in Perth, former international umpire Simon Taufel stood by the decision to declare English wicketkeeper-batter Jamie Smith caught behind, despite initial doubts. The decision came after a DRS review that overturned the on-field call, inciting strong reactions from English fans.

The incident occurred during England's second innings when Smith attempted a pull shot off Brendan Doggett. Despite not being ruled out initially by umpire Nitin Menon, Australian captain Steve Smith's appeal led to a DRS review. TV umpire Sharfuddoula concluded that a spike on the Real Time Snickometer indicated contact with the bat, mandating the reversal of the on-field decision.

Taufel cited the differences in edge-detection technologies, noting Australia's use of Real-Time Snicko, which often generates spikes up to one frame past the bat. He maintained that the correct decision was eventually made, though it took an extended period for confirmation, a factor criticized by former cricketer Mark Waugh as influencing the outcome.
