Savita Punia, the veteran goalkeeper, has pointed to 'poor fitness' as a key reason for the Indian women's hockey team's lackluster performance last year. Despite setbacks, the return of chief coach Sjoerd Marijne has revitalized hopes for World Cup qualification.

The Indian women's team failed to secure a direct spot in this year's World Cup, scheduled for August in Belgium and the Netherlands, after falling short in the Asia Cup. Now, they face a crucial qualification phase in Hyderabad from March 8 to 14, competing against teams such as England, Scotland, Korea, and others.

The top three teams from each qualifier, along with fourth-ranked sides, will secure spots at the World Cup. Savita emphasized that sports have highs and lows, highlighting fitness as a major contributor to their previous Olympic success and current challenges.
