Soraya Aghaei made history by becoming Iran's first female member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), following a 95-2 vote on Wednesday. At 30, she's the youngest to join the body, breaking new ground in gender representation.

Her election is part of the IOC's ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, now with 45% female membership. Aghaei will serve an eight-year term, partaking in significant decisions like the choice of the 2036 Summer Games host city.

Previously competing in badminton at the 2021 Tokyo Summer Games, Aghaei is the first Iranian female Olympian in the sport. Her appointment comes as the IOC is led by its first female president, Kirsty Coventry, highlighting a progressive shift within the institution.
