In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court has cleared the way for Anurag Thakur, former BCCI president, to return to the cricket board's operations. On Thursday, the court modified its January 2017 order, effectively lifting Thakur's nine-year association ban, allowing him to participate under existing rules.
The ruling came after the application of the doctrine of proportionality, with the court finding no grounds to maintain a lifelong ban. The judges acknowledged Thakur's prior unqualified apology and noted his extended period of disassociation from the BCCI's workings.
Originally, proceedings against Thakur commenced due to claims of a false affidavit in 2017. Ultimately, the Supreme Court had accepted his apology for the issue, demonstrating a shift towards leniency in this recent judgement, aligning with reforms in BCCI's governance as recommended by a committee led by ex-CJI Justice R M Lodha.
