Nils Nielsen has resigned as head coach of Japan's women's football team. This announcement comes just weeks after he led the team to a triumphant victory at the Women's Asian Cup. Under Nielsen's leadership, Japan clinched the title for the third time in four tournaments.
The Danish coach's exit was confirmed by the Japan Football Association (JFA) on Thursday, noting that his contract had expired. Nielsen's accomplishments with the team also included securing Japan's spot at the 2027 Women's World Cup in Brazil, thanks to their strong performance in the Asian Cup.
Nielsen joined the Japanese team in 2024, succeeding Futoshi Ikeda. Before his tenure in Japan, Nielsen's coaching career spanned roles with Manchester City's women's team and the Swiss and Danish national teams. Notably, he guided the Danish women's team to a runners-up finish at the Women's European Championship in 2017.
