England cricket captain Ben Stokes has set his sights on a return to competitive cricket by May as he recovers from a cheekbone injury that he admits could have had fatal consequences. Speaking candidly about the incident, which occurred during a training session in February, Stokes expressed his relief at having narrowly escaped serious harm.
'Pretty nasty but, funnily, probably the best result of a bad situation, to be honest,' Stokes explained in an interview with the ECB. He recalled the impact of the blow, noting the potential severity if it had struck just inches differently. 'I might not be here doing this interview,' he remarked, crediting his quick reflexes for mitigating the damage.
Despite undergoing major facial surgery, Stokes remains optimistic about his recovery and return to play. The injury has delayed his participation in the County Championship with Durham but he is determined to regain form in time for England's home Test series against New Zealand and Pakistan. England, currently seventh in the World Test Championship standings, face their next challenge on June 4 against New Zealand at Lord's.
