Dramatic Crash Halts Catalan GP: Acosta & Marquez in Mid-Race Collision
The Catalan Grand Prix was marred by a dramatic crash when Pedro Acosta's KTM bike broke down, causing Alex Marquez to crash into him. The incident led to a race halt, with riders astonished as bikes went airborne. Marquez was hospitalized, though conscious, and the race was scheduled to restart with adjusted standings.
The Catalan Grand Prix was abruptly red-flagged during the race on Sunday, triggered by a dramatic crash involving Pedro Acosta and Alex Marquez. Acosta's KTM failed on lap 12, forcing him to signal the following riders of the impending danger, but Marquez, running second, could not avoid the collision.
Marquez plowed into the back of Acosta's bike, sending both himself and his Ducati hurtling into the wall before spectacularly cartwheeling through the air. Amidst the chaos, Marquez's bike struck VR46 Racing's Fabio Di Giannantonio, who also fell amidst the debris.
Trackside medical teams reported all riders were conscious, although Marquez needed hospitalization. Consequently, the race authorities decided on a restart, repositioning riders based on the standings from the end of lap 11 to contest the remaining 13 laps.
