Wander Franco Escapes Jail Time Amid Controversy

Wander Franco, the Tampa Bay Rays shortstop, will avoid jail time after receiving a suspended sentence in the Dominican Republic for sexually abusing a minor. The ruling was delivered on Monday, with Judge Jose Ramon Nunez citing 'particular circumstances' of the case as the reason for leniency.

The mother of the victim was convicted of trafficking the minor to Franco and extorting money from him. Franco's initial conviction in June 2025 was overturned, leading to a retrial. The abuse allegations date back to December 2022, when Franco was 21 and the victim was just 14 years old.

Franco, who ascended to fame with the Rays and was named an All-Star in 2023, has been on leave without pay from the team. It remains uncertain whether the Rays will continue their association with Franco, following the team's statement respecting the legal process.
