In a notable gesture, Mexico's president Claudia Sheinbaum decided to forgo her World Cup opening match attendance, handing her ticket No. 00001 to Yolett Cervantes Cuaquehua, a 21-year-old Indigenous athlete. The event takes place on June 11 at Azteca Stadium, as Mexico faces South Africa.

Cervantes Cuaquehua, hailing from Veracruz, was chosen by a jury for her exceptional ball-handling abilities. In a press briefing, Sheinbaum emphasized that these athletes embody Mexico, stressing that their participation transcends political representation.

Additionally, Sheinbaum distributed World Cup tickets for other matches in cities like Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey to three other young athletes as part of a government-led contest. These selections underline her commitment to uplifting young female soccer players, prioritizing their visibility over prominent figures, as she confirmed she would view the game from a public fan zone.

The president's choice has sparked diverse views across Mexico, with support for promoting local talent, while others felt it was a missed promotional chance for the country.
