Cristian Volpato has officially joined Australia's World Cup squad just days after his change of national allegiance was confirmed. This comes four years after he declined an earlier invitation from the Socceroos. His inclusion in the team highlights a new phase for the 22-year-old striker, moving from Italy's Under-21 team to Australia.
Coach Tony Popovic announced the 26-man squad on Monday, highlighting a mix of experienced players and World Cup newcomers. Volpato and striker Tete Yengi are among 17 players making their World Cup debut. Veteran players Mat Ryan and Mathew Leckie, each appearing in their fourth World Cup, are set to match the record set by Australian legends Tim Cahill and Mark Milligan.
Popovic recognized the tough decisions involved in assembling the team, noting the efforts of all those who contributed to Australia's direct qualification, even if they didn't make the final squad. Volpato joined the team during their recent camp in Los Angeles, though he did not participate in a friendly loss to Mexico due to timing.
Australia prepares for further competition with a scheduled warm-up match against Switzerland. The team remains focused on their upcoming Group D games against Turkey, the U.S., and Paraguay as they aim for World Cup success.
