Bhaichung Bhutia Praises Sunil Chhetri's Legacy and Calls for Grassroots Development in Indian Football
Former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia commended Sunil Chhetri's significant impact on Indian football and underscored the challenges in finding his successor. Bhutia also emphasized the necessity for long-term grassroots reforms as India's FIFA ranking slides, advocating for a stronger, competitive football culture nationwide.
In a candid conversation with ANI, former Indian football captain Bhaichung Bhutia extolled Sunil Chhetri for his outstanding contributions to Indian football, while reflecting on the challenges of filling the void left by the prolific striker. Chhetri made his international debut in 2005, playing alongside Bhutia for six years, a partnership that bolstered India's triumphs in the 2007 Nehru Cup and 2008 AFC Challenge Cup.
Describing Chhetri's influence as monumental, Bhutia remarked, "I think his contribution has been huge for Indian football." Chhetri, who now stands as India's all-time leading goal-scorer with 95 international goals and 157 appearances, epitomizes leadership and consistency. Bhutia noted the difficulty India will face in replacing him, emphasizing the need for a consistent scorer in both the Indian Super League (ISL) and the national team.
Beyond individual prowess, Bhutia called for comprehensive grassroots development to uplift Indian football from its declining FIFA ranking, which fell to 138th in 2026. He advocated for a robust, long-term approach to nurturing young talent, creating a culture of regular training and competition across the nation. "We need to create that culture environment," he asserted, stressing the importance of weekly competition alongside daily training for young players.
