Japan, the UK, and Italy are intensifying efforts to develop a next-generation fighter jet, targeting deployment by 2035 as part of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP). Officials announced a trilateral government body, GIGO, to be based in the UK, would be established by year's end to oversee the project.
The decision comes as the countries seek to strengthen military cooperation in response to increasing threats from China, Russia, and North Korea. The new fighter jet aims to replace Japan's retiring F-2s and the UK's Eurofighter Typhoons, marking a pivotal upgrade for Japan's defense industry.
Industry giants such as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, BAE Systems, and Leonardo are participating in the joint venture. Akira Sugimoto of Mitsubishi emphasized the project's importance for Japanese suppliers and its potential to boost Japan's industrial base, providing stability and a better business environment.
