Kerala Chief Minister Defends KFON Amid Criticism

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan defended the Kerala Fibre Optic Network project from criticism, highlighting its role in expanding internet access across the state. Despite allegations of underperformance, Vijayan emphasized KFON's achievements and ongoing plans, while addressing criticisms about unmet goals and service issues.

Amidst growing criticism, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stood firm on Tuesday, defending the Kerala Fibre Optic Network (KFON). This state-run Internet service provider aims to bridge the digital divide, with Vijayan asserting its success in delivering extensive Internet connectivity statewide.

Responding to allegations of insufficient speed and service, Vijayan highlighted that KFON has already connected 100,000 homes, targeting a total of 250,000 by next year. He proudly noted KFON's achievement of obtaining a nationwide Internet service license.

However, opposition legislator N Shamsuddin challenged these claims, asserting that the project has failed to deliver on its 2017 promise of 2 million connections. He pointed to reports of dissatisfaction among state-run offices with KFON's service quality. Vijayan, in turn, attributed some of the criticism to competition from private providers.
