Reddit vs. Perplexity: Data Scraping Showdown in the AI Arena
Reddit has filed a lawsuit against AI startup Perplexity and others for unlawfully scraping data to train its AI search engine. This highlights a broader trend of tech firms facing legal actions over AI training content. Reddit licenses content to major AI firms but accuses Perplexity of unauthorized use.
Reddit has launched a legal battle against artificial intelligence startup Perplexity and other firms in a New York federal court, accusing them of illegally scraping data to train their AI applications. The lawsuit claims these companies bypassed Reddit's data protection protocols to access data crucial for Perplexity's 'answer engine.' This case adds to a growing list of legal challenges from content owners against tech companies for the alleged misuse of copyrighted content in AI training.
The lawsuit follows a similar action Reddit took against another AI startup, Anthropic, in June. Reddit's chief legal officer, Ben Lee, emphasized the increasing pressure on AI companies to obtain quality content by any means necessary, likening it to an 'industrial-scale data laundering economy.' Despite this, Perplexity maintained in a statement that their approach to providing AI-based answers remains principled and responsible.
Besides Perplexity, companies like Lithuania's Oxylabs, Russia's AWMProxy, and Texas' SerpApi are named in the lawsuit for allegedly scraping data from billions of search results without authorization. Reddit alleges that Perplexity collaborated with at least one of them to acquire data illicitly. In response, SerpApi plans to contest the claims, while others have yet to comment.
