Can AI think like experts? Mapping human decision structures to guide alignment
How closely do machine learning models actually mirror the way human experts think, structure problems, and develop expertise over time? A new study suggests that bridging this gap requires more than interpreting model outputs. It requires modeling human learning itself with the same analytical rigor used to explain artificial intelligence systems.
In a study titled Bridging Human and Artificial Intelligence: Modeling Human Learning with Explainable AI Tools, published in the journal AI, researchers introduce a quantitative framework for analyzing how human experts structure complex tasks, using explainable AI-inspired graph methods to map expertise development in real-world operational environments.
Mapping human expertise through graph structures
In this framework, operational subtasks are represented as nodes, while strategic relationships between those subtasks are represented as edges. This structure enables researchers to visualize and measure how experts connect components of a complex system during decision-making.
The authors examined task structure at four levels of granularity, allowing them to compare broad strategic organization with finer operational linkages. This multi-scale approach made it possible to detect patterns not visible through traditional qualitative observation alone.
A key finding of the study is that the overall high-level structure remains consistent across operators, independent of their level of experience. Both novice and expert operators consistently divided the overall accelerator task into three functional communities. From a methodological standpoint, the use of long-term operational log data strengthens the study’s credibility. Fourteen years of records provide a robust dataset capturing evolution across experience levels. The authors also make their implementation resources publicly available, supporting transparency and reproducibility.
The research has some limitations. The domain studied is highly specialized, and generalization to other fields requires further testing. Additionally, while graph-based models capture structural relationships, they may not fully represent contextual nuances or emotional dimensions of decision-making.
