New research suggests artificial intelligence (AI) may be reshaping human learning and decision-making in more complex and troubling ways than previously understood. The study argues that while AI systems dramatically increase engagement and efficiency, they may simultaneously weaken deep understanding, autonomy, and critical thinking.
The study, titled "AI-Enabled Innovation in Education and Work: Philosophical Reflections on Digital Transformation and Human Adaptation," published in Philosophies, examines how AI systems restructure human cognition, agency, and knowledge formation across educational and professional environments.
Based on real-world data from Romanian AI initiatives and integrating philosophical frameworks, the research introduces new concepts such as the "engagement–performance paradox" and "structured agency" to explain how AI is not merely assisting human activity but actively reshaping its foundations.

Automation of routine tasks allows workers to focus on higher-level activities, enhancing productivity and job satisfaction.
However, these gains come with a trade-off. The research finds that workers experience diminished control over decision-making processes, as algorithmic systems increasingly guide choices and actions. This shift is described as the automation of autonomy, where human agency is not eliminated but restructured.
Rather than making independent decisions, individuals operate within algorithmically curated environments that shape available options and priorities. This leads to what the study terms structured agency, a condition in which human decisions remain formally intact but are substantively influenced by AI systems.

In the workplace, organizations must consider how AI influences decision-making and responsibility. Ensuring that human agency remains central requires careful design of systems that support, rather than constrain, independent judgment.
The study also highlights the need for new frameworks to understand human–AI interaction. Concepts such as structured agency provide a starting point for analyzing how autonomy and responsibility evolve in technologically mediated environments.
