In 2015, the UN General Assembly had adopted 17 Global Goals or SDGs to be achieved by 2030.

With the election of the President on Tuesday, June 4, 2019, in New York the process for the 74th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations to be convened on 17th -30th September 2019 will start formally. In line with the geographical rotations, the President of the upcoming session is to be elected from the African nations for which the Federal Republic of Nigeria has nominated Mr Tijjani Muhammad Bande, its permanent representative to the United Nations. Although each geopolitical region is facing with its own peculiar problems in achieving the targets of SDGs, the developing nations have a wide range of issues from natural calamities to insurgency to terrorism to regional cooperation.

He will preside over 74th session of the UN General Assembly scheduled from September 17-30 this year. Bande set to be second Nigerian President of UNGA

Professor Tijjani Muhammad Bande is all set to be elected as President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) today for 74th Session scheduled from September 17-30 this year. He will be second Nigeria to be elected as the President of UNGA after Major General Joseph Naven Garba, who held the position between 1989 and 1990.

“Muhammad Buhari, President of Nigeria, has sent a delegation to support his candidature in New York,” said Garba Shehu, official spokesperson of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
