Former Clemson RB Fuller dies at 22

Former Clemson running back C.J. Fuller, a member of the Tigers' 2016 national-title team, has died at age 22. Athletic director Gill Payne of Easley (S.C.) High School, Fuller's former school, announced the news Wednesday. A cause of death wasn't revealed.

Bills RB McCoy faces new abuse allegation

New claims of abuse were made against Buffalo Bills star LeSean McCoy in an amended lawsuit filed this week in a Georgia court. Delicia Cordon -- the running back's former girlfriend who has accused McCoy of being involved in a July 10 home invasion in which she was robbed and assaulted -- stated in her original suit filed Aug. 10 that McCoy physically abused his 6-year-old son and his dog. The boy's mother, Stephanie Maisonet, filed an affidavit last month supporting the child-abuse allegations.

Judge, Stanton power Yanks past A's in the wild-card game

Aaron Judge hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and Giancarlo Stanton later added his first career postseason homer as the New York Yankees advanced to the American League Division Series on Wednesday night with a 7-2, wild-card game victory over the Oakland Athletics at raucous Yankee Stadium. The Yankees will face the Boston Red Sox on Friday at Fenway Park. It will be the first postseason meeting between the longtime rivals since the 2004 AL Championship Series when the Red Sox became the first team to overcome a three-games-to-none deficit en route to their first World Championship since 1918.

Ronaldo denies accusations of 2009 Las Vegas rape

Football player Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday denied rape allegations levelled against him, saying his conscience was clear and that he would calmly await the results of any investigation. "I firmly deny the accusations being issued against me. Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in," the world-famous athlete wrote in a tweet.

MLB notebook: O's parting with manager Showalter

Buck Showalter is out as manager of the Baltimore Orioles, and executive vice president of baseball operations Dan Duquette was fired, too, the team announced Wednesday night. Director of player development Brian Graham will run the baseball operations department while the club looks for someone outside the organization to fill the role, according to the team. The new GM will hire the new manager, per the club's press release.

Caps F Wilson suspended 20 games for hit

The NHL suspended Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson 20 games on Wednesday for a check to the head of St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sundqvist in Sunday's preseason game. The league cited three factors in the length of the suspension, saying it was an illegal hit to the head, caused an injury and was delivered by a repeat offender.

Report: Wolves focused on Heat in Butler talks

Jimmy Butler reportedly informed the Minnesota Timberwolves he would prefer to be dealt with the Miami Heat, and the Wolves appear to be doing their best to facilitate that request. Minnesota has "remained focused" on Miami in its Butler trade talks, according to a report from ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. The two sides have been consistently engaged in talks for several days, and the Heat pushed the Wolves for an answer on a revised offer on Wednesday, according to the report.

NFL notebook: Garoppolo has ACL surgery

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had surgery on Wednesday to repair the torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, coach Kyle Shanahan announced. Shanahan provided no further details and said it's way too early to determine a timeframe for Garoppolo's return, but most ACL recoveries require at least seven to nine months. Previous reports said the team worried about damage to Garoppolo's medial collateral ligament as well. The full extent of damage from such a knee injury often remains unknown until surgery.

Durant lobbies for NBA's return to Seattle

Cubs SS Russell gets a 40-game ban for alleged domestic abuse

Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell received a 40-game suspension for violating Major League Baseball's domestic abuse policy, the league announced Wednesday. The unpaid suspension is retroactive to Sept. 21, when the league placed Russell on administrative leave.
