The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri A. Gitesh Sarma, as Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs. He will replace Ruchi Ghanashyam, the present Secretary (West) in the Ministry.

Sarma joined the India Audits & Accounts Department, Government of India in 1984. He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1986. Mr. Sarma's overseas assignments include Indian Missions in Moscow, Minsk, Odessa (Ukraine), Hong Kong, Islamabad, and London.

As the Secretary (West) in the MEA, he will be responsible for the country's diplomatic affairs with the UK and other European nations.
