A police sub-inspector was killed, while three policemen sustained serious injuries after their car rammed into a stationary truck on a highway in Madhya Pradesh's Chhindwara district on Tuesday, an official said. The accident occurred around 2 am when the police personnel was returning from neighboring Chhattisgarh after apprehending two accused in a theft case, the official said. A team of four policemen were on their way back from Raipur when their car rammed into a stationary truck near Badhchicholi village on Bhopal-Nagpur Highway, Betul's Superintendent of Police (SP) Simala Prasad said. Sub-inspector and Padhar police post-in-charge Vinod Shankar Yadav died on the spot, while an assistant sub-inspector and two constables sustained serious injuries and were referred to Nagpur for treatment, she said. The theft accused was unhurt, while the driver of the vehicle fled from the spot, she said.

The car was so severely damaged that cutters had to be used to extricate the deceased police officer and injured personnel, the official said, adding that a case has been registered and further investigation is underway.
