Gauteng MEC for Transport and Logistics, Kedibone Diale-Tlabela, officially reopened the southbound section of Winnie Mandela Drive, marking a significant step towards completing the comprehensive upgrade of the key roadway. This project promises to alleviate traffic congestion and bolster economic development in the Fourways area, north of Johannesburg.

The Winnie Mandela Drive (K46), connecting the N1 and N14 highways, plays a pivotal role in facilitating smooth traffic flow between Pretoria and Sandton through Diepsloot. The MEC emphasized the road's critical importance for Gauteng's connectivity, highlighting its economic and social implications.

“Upon completion, this artery will enable commuters to travel directly from Fourways to Pretoria via the Winnie Mandela Drive route,” stated Diale-Tlabela during the reopening ceremony.

The ongoing road development has triggered numerous planned projects in the vicinity, notably within the Steyn City area, which is anticipated to generate substantial employment opportunities and further stimulate the local economy. Steyn City Properties (Pty) Ltd, a major contributor to the project, has committed to investing 30% in the initiative. This investment will ensure the involvement of Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) contractors, fostering empowerment and job creation in the construction sector.

“This initiative aligns with our vision of bringing essential services closer to residents and demonstrating improved service delivery. The K46 Phase 2 project stands as a testament to our commitment to enhancing the quality of life of the people of Gauteng," the MEC added.

The reopening of the southbound section is a significant milestone in the multi-phase upgrade of Winnie Mandela Drive, which is poised to transform the transport landscape of the region, ensuring efficient movement and economic vitality in one of South Africa’s key provinces.
