A catastrophic incident occurred in the Czech Republic when a passenger train collided head-on with a freight train, resulting in the loss of at least four lives and injuries to 27 others, officials confirmed on Thursday.

The collision took place late Wednesday night in Pardubice, located about 100 kilometers east of Prague. The high-speed passenger train involved belonged to the private RegioJet company, according to Interior Minister Vít Rakusan.

While none of the injured individuals are in life-threatening condition, the accident claimed the lives of at least two Ukrainian women, as confirmed by Ukraine's Foreign Ministry. Rescuers reported that 380 passengers were on the train heading to Kosice, Slovakia, and further to Chop in Ukraine.

Both train drivers survived the deadly crash, as reported by the local CTK news agency. Transport Minister Martin Kupka indicated that the main track between Prague and the eastern part of the country was closed for investigations, partially reopening nine hours later.

Prime Minister Petr Fiala expressed his heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this tragic event, while RegioJet's owner, Radim Jancura, stated that his company is prepared to compensate the passengers. An ongoing investigation by the state agency seeks to determine whether the failure to stop at a signal was caused by human error or technical malfunction.
