Karnataka Infrastructure Minister M B Patil on Tuesday announced the state government's intention to establish a second international airport for Bengaluru by 2035. This initiative aims to accommodate the anticipated surge in both passenger and cargo traffic at the existing Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in North Bengaluru, projected to handle up to 110 million passengers and 1.10 million tonnes of cargo by that time.
Patil emphasized the necessity of preemptive planning for the new airport, proposing a location within a 50 to 60 km radius from KIA. Current considerations exclude Tumakuru and Chitradurga, focusing instead on areas like Dobbespet or Tumakuru due to their connectivity and potential for long-term benefits. The Infrastructure Development Corporation (Karnataka) Limited (iDeCK) has suggested seven to eight potential locations, though no final decision has been made.
Given the exclusivity clause in the agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited, which prohibits the establishment of another airport within a 125 km radius until 2033, the state must commence the land acquisition process promptly to ensure timely development. The required land area for the new airport is estimated to be between 4,500 and 5,000 acres.
