With a consistent GDP growth rate exceeding 7%, India has become an 'inspiring lighthouse of growth' amid global geopolitical tensions and climate emergencies, ITC Chairman and Managing Director Sanjiv Puri announced on Friday.

Addressing the company’s annual general meeting, Puri highlighted India’s standout performance as the fastest-growing major economy, which has garnered global respect and indicates immense future potential. Analysts forecast India's per capita GDP will reach $4,000 by 2030, significantly boosting domestic consumption and driving higher growth.

Puri stressed that India is poised for 'mega opportunities' arising from the diversification in global supply chains, the ongoing digital revolution, and the urgent green transition. Experts predict India could contribute 18% to the world's GDP growth in the next five years, with potential to reach 30% between 2035 and 2040.

The combination of India's large market, favorable demographics, rising disposable incomes, technological strength, and dynamic entrepreneurship is expected to sustain growth. Puri remarked that ongoing public investment in physical, digital, agricultural, and rural infrastructure, alongside sharp execution, is creating a virtuous cycle of consumption, investment, and employment in India.

Noting the rise of aspirational India, Puri expressed confidence that consumption-led growth will continue to flourish. He also highlighted the crucial role Indian enterprises can play in this growth journey, citing their deep roots in the country’s economic fabric.

Puri discussed the turbulent global economy, marked by geopolitical tensions, climate emergencies, cost-of-living crises, food and nutrition security issues, and insufficient livelihood opportunities. Amidst these challenges, rapid technological advancements, particularly AI, are reshaping the future.

Puri pinpointed India's demographics as a key strength, with over a billion people, nearly 70% of the population, being of working age by 2030. This demographic advantage is projected to drive significant global workforce growth, with a quarter of the incremental global workforce coming from India over the next decade.

The Budget 2024 has introduced multidimensional programs to enhance skills, bolster MSMEs, and stimulate labor-intensive sectors. The newly established ONDC platform, akin to UPI’s transformative impact on financial transactions, is expected to empower micro and small enterprises.

Puri emphasized the potential of India's agricultural and rural sectors, which employ nearly half the workforce, to further generate livelihoods through value addition, digital progress, and diversification of on-farm, off-farm, and non-farm employment. He lauded the recent budget for addressing these critical areas.
