Russian forces are mounting their heaviest assaults near the strategically critical eastern city of Pokrovsk, Kyiv's military reported on Monday. The attacks threaten a crucial supply route for Ukrainian troops who are struggling against Moscow's 29-month-old invasion.

The fiercest battles on the eastern front are occurring around Pokrovsk, a transport hub with a pre-war population of 61,000. This city lies on a major road that serves as a key supply line to embattled Ukrainian-held towns like Chasiv Yar and Kostiantynivka. The General Staff reported that Ukraine had successfully fended off 52 Russian assaults in this area over the past 24 hours, particularly around the villages of Zhelanne and Novooleksandrivka.

The Russian defense ministry announced on Sunday that its forces had captured the villages of Prohres and Yevhenivka in Ukraine's Donetsk region, both located east of Pokrovsk. Kyiv has not commented on this claim. Since launching its full-scale invasion in February 2022, Russia still occupies nearly a fifth of Ukraine. While Ukrainian forces repelled the Russians from the outskirts of Kyiv early in the war and regained territory in the east and south later in 2022, they have mainly been on the defensive this year following a failed counteroffensive in 2023.
