The stock markets closed flat on Monday despite record-breaking intraday highs. The BSE Sensex rose by 30.39 points to close at 81,363.11, while the NSE Nifty gained 7.60 points, ending at 24,842.45. Strong performances in banking stocks and Larsen & Toubro drove these gains.
The Sensex hit an intraday peak of 81,908.43, while the Nifty reached 24,999.75 before settling down. Among Nifty companies, 25 advanced and 25 declined. The top gainers were Divi's Lab, BPCL, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finserv, and M&M. The major losers included Bharti Airtel, Titan, Cipla, ITC, and Tata Consumer Products.
The broader market also saw positive movement, with the BSE MidCap index rising by 0.4 percent, and the SmallCap index up by 0.8 percent. The Nifty PSU Bank index surged over 3 percent, signaling strong investor confidence in public sector banks. The realty sector showed a 1.68 percent increase.
Meanwhile, the Indian Rupee fell to an all-time low due to heightened demand for dollars from importers. Analysts expect a continued negative trend for the rupee due to month-end dollar demand and potential dollar recovery ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting. The strong domestic market and fresh Foreign Institutional Investor (FII) inflows could offer some support.
In the commodities market, WTI crude oil prices fell by 4.6 percent last week, marking the third consecutive weekly decline amid weak demand from China and geopolitical uncertainties in Gaza. Oil prices inched up to USD 77.4 per barrel but remained close to weekly lows. The upcoming OPEC+ meeting on August 1 and recent positive industrial profit data from China are key factors to watch.
Varun Aggarwal, founder and managing director of Profit Idea, noted that investors remain cautious ahead of crucial central bank meetings this week, including those of the Federal Reserve (FOMC), the Bank of England (BoE), and the Bank of Japan (BoJ). These meetings are expected to offer critical insights into future monetary policies, which will influence market directions in the near term.
