The Meghalaya government has given the nod to resume two-way traffic on the Umiam bridge starting Tuesday, after substantial repairs were completed.
Efforts by the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) to address structural concerns began last December, including replacing bridge bearings and adjusting expansion joints.
The Power Minister, AT Mondal, confirmed that repairs costing Rs 19.9 crore would allow vehicles under 4 metric tons to use the bridge, significantly alleviating the eight-month long traffic disruption between Guwahati and Shillong.
