The Ministry of Power has unveiled several initiatives to provide uninterrupted 24x7 power supply across India, particularly targeting rural and underserved regions.
The Indian government has launched key schemes such as Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), and Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana (SAUBHAGYA). With a total investment of Rs 1.85 lakh crore, these schemes focus on infrastructure improvements like substations, HT and LT lines, and underground cabling.
DDUGJY has electrified 18,374 villages, while SAUBHAGYA has connected 2.86 crore households. Additionally, the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) aims to enhance distribution sector efficiency with an allocation of Rs 3,03,758 crore over five years. The government has added 2,14,237 MW of new generation capacity and expanded transmission lines by 1,95,181 circuit kilometers over the past decade.
Looking ahead, the government has set ambitious targets for generating an additional 3,37,900 MW by 2032, including a mix of thermal, hydro, nuclear, and renewable sources. Significant investments have also been made in states like Jharkhand, where numerous infrastructure projects are underway. Under the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020, distribution licensees must supply 24x7 power, ensuring a consistent national approach.
