Leadership Shakeup at Starbucks: CEO Laxman Narasimhan Steps Down, Chipotle's Brian Niccol to Take Helm
Starbucks announced that CEO Laxman Narasimhan is stepping down after a year in the role. Brian Niccol, current CEO of Chipotle, will assume the position on September 9. The announcement comes as Starbucks faces weak demand and discontented investors. Starbucks shares surged over 13% following the news.
Starbucks, grappling with sluggish demand and discontented investors, announced Tuesday that CEO Laxman Narasimhan is stepping down after a little over a year in the role.
The Seattle-based coffee titan stated that Brian Niccol, the current chairman and CEO of Chipotle, will assume the position of chairman and CEO of Starbucks on September 9.
Shares of Starbucks soared by more than 13% before the market's opening bell.
Narasimhan, a former executive at PepsiCo and the ex-CEO of UK-based consumer health company Reckitt, took over as CEO of Starbucks in March 2023, succeeding longtime leader Howard Schultz. Schultz had come out of retirement in 2022 to serve as interim CEO.
However, Narasimhan’s tenure saw a quick decline in investor confidence amid weak sales and multiple challenges, including stiff competition from lower-cost rivals in China and boycotts in the Middle East over perceptions of the company's support for Israel.
Mellody Hobson, chair of Starbucks' board, praised Niccol for his track record of transformation at Chipotle, highlighting his focus on menu innovation, operational excellence, and digital growth.
“Brian is a culture carrier who brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of driving innovation and growth,” Hobson said in a statement. “Like all of us at Starbucks, he understands that a remarkable customer experience is rooted in an exceptional partner experience.”
Howard Schultz added his endorsement, stating, “I believe he is the leader Starbucks needs at a pivotal moment in its history. He has my respect and full support.”
