At least 27 Indian pilgrims from Maharashtra were killed and 16 others injured on Friday after their tourist bus plunged into the fast-moving Marsyangdi river in central Nepal, police reported.

The tragic incident transpired in the Anbookhaireni area of Chitawan district. The bus, hailing from Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, carried 43 passengers, including the driver and two helpers, and was traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Sixteen passengers died instantly, while eleven others succumbed to injuries during treatment, according to Shailendra Thapa, Deputy Spokesperson of Armed Police Force (APF). The injured have been airlifted to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu. The group of pilgrims had arrived for a 10-day tour of Nepal, MyRepublica news portal confirmed.
