The All India Railway Track Maintainers Union (AIRTU) recently brought their grievances to the attention of Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi during his visit to Delhi Cantt railway station.
In a written note handed to Gandhi, AIRTU alleged that the Railway Ministry shows a lack of concern for nearly four lakh track maintainers who ensure the safety of train operations in India. The union claimed that the ministry has not addressed their critical issues, including high fatality rates, inadequate safety measures, and dwindling workforce.
Highlighting the perils track maintainers face, AIRTU National General Secretary Kantharaju pointed out that despite ministry claims about providing a 'Rakshak App' for safety alerts, the app is unavailable in all 68 railway divisions. He also noted that track maintainers are often assigned personal tasks by railway officials, detracting from their primary responsibilities and leading to accidents. AIRTU members have sought Rahul Gandhi's help and plan to reach out to other MPs to advocate for better policies and working conditions.
