Delhi Implements 50% Compounding for Traffic Offences

Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot announced that the government will compound certain traffic offences at 50% of the challan amount. This measure is aimed at easing the workload on courts and the transport department. The provision allows officers and assistant traffic inspectors to settle fines within specified periods.

In a bid to streamline traffic regulations, Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot revealed on Wednesday that the government has decided to compound specific traffic offences at 50 per cent of the challan amount under certain sections of the Motor Vehicles Act. The new directive has authorized officers of the rank of head constable and above from the Delhi Traffic Police and the transport department, as well as assistant traffic inspectors (ATIs) of the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), to handle these offences.

The initiative aims to provide convenience to commuters by encouraging the prompt settlement of traffic fines, thereby reducing the burden on courts and the transport department. According to an official statement, these offences include allowing unauthorized individuals to drive vehicles, driving without a valid license, dangerous driving, and driving uninsured vehicles, among others.

Gahlot emphasized that by rationalizing compounding fees and delegating enforcement powers, the government hopes to make compliance easier for citizens while enhancing overall enforcement efforts. The delegation of these powers is also expected to aid the smooth functioning of public transport systems, especially buses, by ensuring real-time enforcement. The proposal has been sent to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena for approval.
