In a proactive safety measure, the Kolkata airport authorities have announced a suspension of all flight operations for 15 hours as Cyclone Dana approaches. The operations will pause from 6 pm Thursday to 9 am Friday to protect passengers, staff, and airport infrastructure.
The decision was reached unanimously by stakeholders, including the Air Traffic Control and the airport operators committee, taking into account predictions of heavy winds and torrential rains. The Indian Meteorological Department forecasts wind speeds of up to 120 kmph during the cyclone's landfall and anticipates severe crosswinds that would make take-offs and landings challenging.
The airport, which typically manages over 400 flights daily, has initiated a comprehensive safety protocol. Preparations started earlier this week, focusing on infrastructure checks and servicing essential installations to mitigate cyclone impacts.
