Indian families are shifting towards lightweight and lower-carat jewelry as a tactical response to rising gold prices, confirmed industry insiders. This trend emerged when individuals like Mumbai's Shubhangi More opted for 18-carat designs to cut costs while maintaining traditional appeal.

This year, gold prices have climbed 22% in India, the world's second-largest consumer of the metal, following a 15% increase last year. As buyers persist in their preference for traditional designs, they seek lighter and more affordable options, indicated Bachhraj Bamalwa of Nemichand Bamalwa & Sons.

Jewelry manufacturers are leveraging advances in technology to create traditional designs in lighter forms, according to Sachin Jain from the World Gold Council. The growing popularity of 18-carat gold, which is both economical and durable, is evident as its market share has risen significantly compared to two years ago, noted Surendra Mehta of the India Bullion and Jewellers Association.
