Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has intervened to address concerns over the recent fare hikes implemented by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL).

The Chief Minister's directive comes in response to complaints that the new fare structure, which more than doubled in some areas, was causing undue hardship for riders. Siddaramaiah emphasized the need to protect commuters' interests, urging the BMRCL to revise the fares where increases are deemed abnormal.

The hike, initially reported at around 50 percent, introduced a separate rate for peak hours, borrowing from ride-hailing services. The fare increase has disproportionately impacted students and low-income groups, resulting in a shift to alternative transport modes like buses and private vehicles. BMRCL reported a revenue dip post-revision, highlighting commuter dissatisfaction.
