World Bank's Decentralization Move: Bringing Decisions Closer to Home
The World Bank plans to decentralize by moving regional management from Washington to global hubs. This shift, led by President Ajay Banga, aims to enhance responsiveness to local needs. The move will involve placing two-thirds of operations staff closer to the regions they serve.

The World Bank is embarking on a major restructuring, opting to decentralize its operations by relocating regional management from Washington D.C. to various global hub offices, according to an announcement made on Tuesday.
This strategic shift aims to ensure that the bank can better and more swiftly respond to local needs. For the first time, two-thirds of the World Bank Group's operational staff will be based in the regions they serve, marking a significant milestone in this ongoing effort, the bank revealed in a communique to its employees.
Championed by World Bank President Ajay Banga since his arrival in June 2023, this initiative seeks to enhance operational efficiency, streamline customer access, and place senior managers closer to their served regions.
