India is engaging in comprehensive negotiations with the United Kingdom to finalize a social security agreement, while also advancing discussions on trade and investment pacts. According to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal, these initiatives aim to alleviate the financial burden on Indian professionals contributing to UK's social security funds without reaping its benefits.
The proposed social security pact, referred to as the Double Contribution Convention Agreement, seeks to ensure that Indian professionals working temporarily in Britain are exempt from double contributions. The talks are proceeding alongside efforts to establish a free trade agreement and a bilateral investment treaty, in which India is vying for reciprocal benefits.
Efforts to resume talks began this Monday after both countries initiated discussions on a free trade agreement in early 2022. India has similar agreements with countries like Belgium, Germany, and France, and aims to extend the same arrangement with the UK to support businesses and professionals working abroad.
