India has witnessed a promising start to 2025 with its retail sector achieving a 5% sales growth in January, according to the Retailers Association of India's latest survey. Released on Wednesday, the 58th Retail Business Survey sheds light on regional disparities and emerging trends within the sector.
The survey indicates that West India leads with an impressive 7% growth, while North and South India follow with 5%. East India trailed slightly behind with a 4% increase. Among categories, food and grocery shone with a 13% rise, consumer durables and quick-service restaurants each posted a 6% growth.
RAI CEO Kumar Rajagopalan emphasized the impact of the Union Budget 2025's income tax changes, which have provided relief to retailers post-slowdown. He highlighted the need for retailers to adapt to shifting consumer tastes to remain competitive in the evolving market environment, as seen during December 2024's festive sales season.
