The Sikkim Chief Secretary R Telang convened a significant review meeting to assess the progress of the Sevoke-Rangpo railway project (SRRP). Officials from the railways and Indian Railway Construction International Limited (IRCON) provided a comprehensive update on the project's timeline, infrastructure, and challenges.
During the high-level discussion, revelations were made about the project's progress. The all-weather railway line extending 45 km from Sevoke to Rangpo has achieved over 70% physical progress, with a target to complete by December 2027. Designed for both passenger and freight trains, the SRRP is expected to meet the region's demand and capacity requirements.
Forward-looking plans were also discussed, such as completing the Sevoke station yard and envisioning a world-class station at Rangpo. Furthermore, future phases aim to extend the railway to Gangtok and Nathula, highlighting the strategic importance for regional connectivity, economic enhancement, and tourism.
