Leadership Shift at Bank of Japan: Deputy Governors Steer Amidst Ueda's Absence

In a surprising turn of events, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda has been hospitalized, prompting changes in the leadership for the upcoming policy meeting set for June 15-16. According to an announcement made on Wednesday by the central bank, Ueda will be absent as he undergoes medical treatment.

In his stead, Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino has been tasked with presiding over the crucial rate review meeting. Additionally, the central bank has appointed another Deputy Governor, Shinichi Uchida, to oversee the post-meeting press conference. These deputies are stepping in to ensure the smooth continuation of the bank’s operations in Ueda's absence.

Despite being hospitalized, Ueda is expected to stay connected with the bank's activities by working remotely. The central bank has confirmed that he is likely to return to lead the next policy meeting scheduled for July 30-31. This temporary leadership swap reflects BOJ's resilience and commitment to continuity during unanticipated challenges.
