China Reclaims Top Spot as Germany's Largest Trading Partner Amid U.S. Tariffs
In early 2025, China became Germany's largest trading partner again, edging out the U.S. due to increased tariffs affecting German exports to America. German trade with China reached €163.4 billion, while trade with the U.S. was slightly less. U.S. tariffs also contributed to declining German export numbers.
China has reclaimed its position as Germany's top trading partner, overtaking the United States in the first eight months of 2025. This change comes as German exports to the U.S. were hampered by increased tariffs, according to preliminary data from the German statistics office.
Trade between Germany and China totaled 163.4 billion euros, compared to the U.S. at 162.8 billion euros. The U.S. led German trade in 2024, but the equation shifted again with Donald Trump's return to the White House and the imposition of renewed tariffs.
German exports to the U.S. fell 7.4% in the first eight months, with a 23.5% year-on-year drop in August alone. Meanwhile, imports from China surged 8.3%, even as German exports to China declined. These trends highlight ongoing shifts in global trade dynamics.
