India has achieved a significant diplomatic victory by being re-elected to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council, securing the highest vote in its category. This re-election took place during the IMO Assembly in London for the 2025-26 biennium.
The election places India in Category B, alongside other leading maritime nations including Australia, Brazil, and Canada. On December 4, the newly elected Council will convene for its 136th session to elect its Chair and Vice-Chair.
The Indian High Commission, in a statement from London, expressed gratitude for the support received from international partners and emphasized India's commitment to the global maritime sector's growth, as per its Vision 2047 plans and looming $1 trillion investment in the industry.
