Airlines Scramble as Iran Closes Airspace Amid Rising Tensions
Iran has temporarily restricted its airspace, impacting global airlines. The move, influenced by escalating regional conflicts and threats, has seen airlines like Lufthansa and ITA Airways alter routes or cancel flights. This heightened security risk could extend as geopolitical tensions persist, impacting international flight operations.
On Wednesday, Iran unexpectedly shut its airspace to most flights, except those with international clearance, at 5:15 p.m. ET. This decision comes amidst heightened tensions in the region as a precaution against potential missile and drone threats that may affect commercial airline travel.
The temporary restriction, lasting over two hours, may be extended, affecting airlines worldwide. Many, including India's IndiGo and Russia's Aeroflot, have already experienced disruptions. The closure follows the U.S. decision to withdraw personnel from Middle Eastern bases and concerns about the safety of airline routes.
Major carriers, such as Lufthansa, flydubai, and Turkish Airlines, have responded by adjusting their flight plans, avoiding Iranian airspace. Some airlines, like ITA Airways, have opted to suspend night flights to critical regions. Aviation risk-monitoring group Safe Airspace warns that current conditions increase the chances of military activity, complicating airline operations further.
