A tragic collision between a truck and a school minibus in South Africa's Gauteng province has claimed the lives of at least 13 children, authorities confirmed on Monday. The minibus, transporting students to various schools in Johannesburg's southwest, collided with the truck around 7 a.m.
Preliminary reports revealed that 11 children died on the scene, while two others died later at the hospital. Authorities indicate that the minibus was reportedly overtaking stationery vehicles when it met the truck head-on. The truck driver is to be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
Emergency services transported several injured individuals to nearby hospitals. President Cyril Ramaphosa and Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube called for stringent measures to ensure the safety of school transport, emphasizing the importance of roadworthy vehicles and responsible driving.
