Pakistan Halts Cargo Ship Departure After Collision Near Karachi

A collision near Karachi port has led Pakistan to withhold permission for a cargo ship to depart for Jeddah as an inquiry into the incident is conducted.

Following a maritime collision just outside Karachi port, Pakistan has barred a cargo ship bound for Jeddah from departing. The incident involved two vessels, MV Nevi flying the UAE flag and MV Papu from Liberia, according to statements made by officials on Saturday.

Anwar Junaid Chaudhry, the nation's federal minister for shipping, announced that the Karachi Port Trust has launched an investigation to identify accountability for the collision that occurred on May 28. He noted that preliminary findings suggest crew negligence may have been a contributing factor. Meanwhile, MV Nevi is currently docked at Karachi Port for repairs due to damage sustained to its hull. MV Papu will remain anchored at sea during the inquiry's duration.

Photographs show significant damage sustained by MV Nevi, including a substantial breach on its lower forward side. This vessel is involved in the installation and maintenance of undersea internet lines.
