European Luxury Cars Set to Hit Indian Roads at Lower Prices

European luxury cars are set to become more affordable in India as a new free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union approaches implementation. The agreement, anticipated to take effect by early next year, will offer quota-based import duty concessions for manufacturers like BMW, Mercedes, and Lamborghini. This strategic move aims to enhance market accessibility while encouraging European car manufacturers to explore manufacturing prospects within India.
The conclusion of negotiations for the FTA marks a significant step forward, following talks initiated in 2007 but paused in 2013 due to contentious issues around duty concessions. Under the FTA, India will gradually reduce import levies to 10 percent for specified quotas, while the EU eliminates duties for Indian automobiles. The agreement is a critical stride in strengthening India's auto sector, a central element of the 'Make in India' initiative.
Vehicle imports to India currently face duties ranging from 66 to 125 percent, but the new pact introduces a quota system to balance market dynamics. Indian consumers, with a strong market in cars priced below Rs 25 lakh, are shielded from European competition in this segment. The agreement further stimulates job creation and manufacturing growth as Indian incentives encourage EU firms to establish local production facilities.
