Kauvery Hospital Pioneers Combined Cardiac Procedure in Chennai
Kauvery Hospital, Alwarpet, successfully completed an innovative cardiac procedure, combining MitraClip and Left Atrial Appendage Closure, for high-risk patients. This combined approach offers a safer treatment option, ensuring reduced procedural risk and hospital stay, enhancing patient recovery and outcomes.
Kauvery Hospital in Alwarpet, Chennai, has successfully executed a groundbreaking cardiac procedure that combines Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Mitral Valve Repair (MitraClip) and Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) for the first time in a single session, targeting high-risk patients with severe mitral valve regurgitation coupled with atrial fibrillation.
The procedure was performed on a 79-year-old patient who presented with severe mitral regurgitation due to a flail anterior mitral leaflet, in addition to atrial fibrillation and a prior transient stroke history. This demographic typically faces increased risk for heart failure and stroke, making the standard open-heart surgery a less feasible option. The minimally invasive MitraClip method serves as a viable alternative, providing much-needed relief without the potential complications of conventional surgery.
Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC) is instrumental in reducing the risk of stroke for patients with atrial fibrillation by sealing the left atrial appendage, a frequent site for blood clot formation, using a specialized occluder device. By seamlessly integrating MitraClip with LAAC, physicians not only enhance patient safety but also shorten recovery time, as evidenced by the patient’s discharge within 48 hours post-procedure. This innovative approach signifies a significant leap in cardiac care, emphasizing Kauvery Hospital's commitment to pioneering effective and patient-centric treatment methods.
