Small UK businesses are struggling to operate within European Union markets, facing numerous challenges due to post-Brexit adjustments. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) revealed these difficulties, despite efforts by the current Labour government to strengthen ties with the EU amid global economic uncertainties.
An alarming report by the FSB highlights significant barriers for small firms trading with the EU, with three in ten businesses considering halting EU trade if conditions do not improve. Barriers include cumbersome customs documentation, mandatory physical inspections, and intricate product marking and labeling regulations.
To mitigate these issues, the FSB proposes several solutions. These include mutual recognition of product standards, a streamlined digital customs system, and a new UK-EU de minimis trade agreement. Additionally, they recommend export grants to alleviate initial costs and the removal of EU VAT intermediary requirements.
