The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) announced a significant breakthrough in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project with the installation of the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead at Vikhroli in Mumbai's eastern suburbs.

The cutterhead, weighing 350 tonnes, represents the final assembly stage of the TBM's main shield, crucial for the high-speed rail corridor. Two TBMs, each over 3,000 tonnes, are prepared for a complex 16-km tunnel, including a pioneering 7-km undersea section beneath Thane Creek.

This mammoth task involves state-of-the-art technology, with 84 cutter discs and 124 scrapers ensuring efficient excavation. The project navigates urban landscapes and involves extensive monitoring to safeguard structures, utilizing Surface Settlement Points, Optical Displacement Sensors, and other advanced instruments.
