U.S. Industrial Natural Gas Consumption Soars to Record Levels

U.S. industrial natural gas consumption is projected to hit record highs through 2027, driven by increased manufacturing activity, particularly in the chemicals sector. The rising trend, supported by the EIA's latest report, also highlights the impact of efficiency improvements and seasonal demand fluctuations on consumption patterns.

The United States is set to witness record-breaking industrial natural gas consumption in the coming years. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration's (EIA) Short-Term Energy Outlook, industrial usage of natural gas averaged an unprecedented 23.6 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, surpassing previous records.

Projections indicate rising consumption linked to enhanced manufacturing activities, with expectations of continued growth through 2026 and 2027. The forecast suggests a gradual increase as the natural gas-weighted manufacturing index experiences a slight rise, further propelling demand.

However, the EIA's report also points to a tempered growth pace, driven by concurrent efficiency improvements in industrial processes. The chemical sector remains the primary consumer of natural gas, which is vital for heat, electricity, and as a feedstock. Seasonal variations further influence the demand curve, with peak usage in winter offset by lower summer consumption.
